Madness
When an investigator is reduced to 0 Sanity, he may choose to gain a Madness card. If he does this, he does not lose any items or Clue tokens for being driven insane, and his Sanity is restored to its maximum value instead of to 1. However, the investigator must still move to either Arkham Asylum or Lost in Time and Space, as appropriate. In addition, he must draw one Madness card.
Madness cards inflict long-term penalties of a mental nature to the investigator and are extremely difficult to get rid of (there is a slight chance to cure them when having an encounter at Arkham Asylum). Madness cards are not items and cannot be discarded or traded as such.
If an investigator’s maximum sanity is reduced to 0, that investigator is devoured.
Madness cards first appeared in the Dunwich Horror expansion. There are 24 from Dunwich Horror, and 12 from Miskatonic Horror, for a total of 36.
An Investigator (except Rita Young) is devoured if they have a duplicate Madness card, or a Madness and its matching Injury.
